Intended use of HIV Ab/Ag 4th Gen Rapid Test:
The TRUSTline HIV Ab/Ag 4th Gen Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunoassay for the qualitative detection of antibodies (IgG, IgM, IgA) to HIV-1 and HIV-2 virus and HIV-1 p24 antigen in human serum, plasma or whole blood. It is intended to be used by professionals as a screening test and as an aid in the diagnosis of infection with HIV. The test kit is not automated and does not require any additional instruments. Any reactive specimen with the TRUSTline HIV-Ab/Ag 4th Gen Rapid Test must be confirmed with alternative testing methods, such as ELISA/Western blot assay/PCR, and clinical findings.
Purpose and Importance:
- The fourth-generation HIV test is designed to identify acute HIV infection.
- During the early phase of infection, the virus rapidly multiplies, and individuals are more likely to transmit it.
- Detecting acute HIV allows for timely treatment and helps prevent further spread of the virus.
Components Detected:
- The test simultaneously detects two crucial components:
- HIV-specific antigen p24: This protein is present only in individuals with acute HIV infection. It triggers the immune response.
- HIV antibodies: These are produced by the immune system in response to the virus.
- By identifying both antigens and antibodies, the test provides a more complete screening1.
Testing Process:
- The HIV-Ab/Ag 4th Gen Rapid Test requires a blood sample (usually drawn from a vein) that is sent to a lab for testing.
- Lab-based blood testing is the most accurate type of test.
- Several products are approved for fourth-generation testing, including:
Different from Older Tests:
- Unlike older-generation HIV tests, which rely solely on detecting antibodies, the fourth-generation test can identify acute HIV.
- Third-generation tests become reliable only about 3 months after exposure to the virus.
- The fourth-generation test can detect HIV within a shorter timeframe, allowing for earlier diagnosis and treatment.
